Tips for longer lasting hair color

If you’ve ever applied a new coat of paint to anything, you can remember the shiny, vibrant appearance of the wet paint immediately after you brushed it on. You then watched that resonant color fade to a dull, dry coat. Luckily, your hair color doesn’t fade quite that fast and there are things you can do to help it last even longer.

Use a color locking or color safe shampoo and conditioner

Color locking and color safe shampoos and conditioners help your hair maintain essential nutrients and provide UV protection to help your color last longer than it would with regular shampoos and conditioners.

Shampoo your hair only every other day

That’s right. You don’t need to shampoo your hair every day and doing so may even dry your hair out. Losing moisture in your hair will make your color look dull and feel distressed.

Use cooler water to rinse your hair

No, you won’t have to take a cold shower. In fact, you shouldn’t. Wash your hair with warmer or hot water to open the cuticles of your hair to allow the shampoo and conditioner to cleanse and condition as best as possible. Now, pay attention because here’s the important part: When you go to rinse the conditioner out of your hair, turn the water to a cooler temperature and do the final rinse in cooler or cold water. If you rinse your hair in warmer or hot water, you are keeping your hair cuticles open and susceptible to harmful effects of styling tools or anything in the environment.
